Stefan Gijssels is Chair of the Patient Expert Center (PEC) in Belgium since January 2021. He is also member of the board of Alzheimer Liga Vlaanderen and member of ProLong, the lung cancer association. His book “De Stem van de Patiënt” (the voice of the patient), was published by Lannoo Campus in 2025. The book advocates for a better and formal integration of the patient perspective in medical practice and health policy.
In 2018, Stefan Gijssels co-founded and led Digestive Cancers Europe. He is the author of the “Roadmap for the Prevention and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer in Europe”, published in 2021 by Digestive Cancers Europe. He is the co-author of the European Code of Cancer Practice, organised by the European Cancer Organisation. He was co-chair of the Patient Advisory Committee of the European Cancer Organisation, member of its Executive Committee and Board.
He was co-chair of the European Cancer Summit in 2020, organised by the European Cancer Organisation, and chair of the European Cancer Forum in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Stefan is a survivor of a metastatic colorectal cancer, diagnosed and treated in 2015.
