Prof. Francesco Sclafani, MD PhD is a Consultant Medical Oncologist based at HUB Bordet-Erasme in Brussels, where he is Head of Clinic in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology and Director of the GI Cancer Lab. He graduated from the University of Palermo in 2003 and completed his specialist Medical Oncology training at the University of Milan in 2009. He previously worked at the St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin (2010-2012) and at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London (2012-2018). He was awarded an MD(Res) degree at the University of London – Institute of Cancer Research, UK, in 2018. He is Maître de Conférence at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is an active member of international cooperative groups such as the EORTC Gastrointestinal Tumour Study Group and the International Rare Cancer Initiative Anal Cancer Working Subgroup. He is member of the European Commission Initiative on Colorectal Cancer (ECICC) working group and Secretary of the EORTC Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer Group. He previously served as Co-Chair of the EORTC Colorectal and Anal Task Force (2019-2023), and Co-Chair of the ECCO Essential Requirements for Quality Cancer Care (ERQCC) initiative for pancreatic cancer (2019-2021). His main research focus is on colorectal and anal cancers. He is investigator of several phase I-IV clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancers, and has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
